This is an update to a story that was written and published on August, 18, 2023.

Elcho’s Revitalized Business District

In anticipation of the Grand Opening of the business district, the Antigo Daily Journal published a whole separate section of the paper just for Elcho. The Elcho Historical Society has a surviving copy of this newsprint, but it is in poor condition. The edition sported many pictures of the new buildings, articles, business advertisements, and curious things about Elcho. Grand Opening of “Ye Olde Muskie Inn”

September 1, 1923, was as special to Elcho as it was to Charles W. Fish. It was the day of the grand opening of the business district. The fire spread quickly because of a northwest wind which blew the fire to the bank (which was the first Modern Woodmen of America Hall), to the Muskie Inn, the general store and then across the street taking out the depot. Everyone escaped unharmed. A couple of weeks later, CW Fish secured the funding to rebuild the entire business district. In September 1923, the business district reopened.

Little Village of Summit Lake

Summit Lake is noted for its sandy beaches, swimming, pan fish and northern pike. I believe it is the highest lake in Wisconsin. Also, there are trout streams, creeks with bullheads, deer and bear hunting, duck, geese and pheasant. Summit Lake is known as a tourist town (with many log cottages).

Summit Lake was known for its logging industry, saw mills and small farmers.

Peter Rasmussen was one of the first people in Summit Lake. He was a telegraph person – climbed poles and sent and received messages. He also built several cottages on the lake.

Summit Lake is in north central Wisconsin, in the township of Upham – the county of Langlade.
