The Great Fire of 1923
This is an update to a story that was written and published on August, 18, 2023.
An event inside the central heating plant that was located within the drug store occurred on February 18, 1923. This changed the landscape of Elcho, Wisconsin, for a very long time.

Elcho’s Revitalized Business District
In anticipation of the Grand Opening of the business district, the Antigo Daily Journal published a whole separate section of the paper just for Elcho. The Elcho Historical Society has a surviving copy of this newsprint, but it is in poor condition. The edition sported many pictures of the new buildings, articles, business advertisements, and curious things about Elcho. It really gives the consumer a snapshot of what Elcho was like and the excitement around the new business section. It really gave Elcho all the amenities that you would find in larger cities, this is what really makes this town’s history so special.

Grand Opening of “Ye Olde Muskie Inn”
September 1, 1923, was as special to Elcho as it was to Charles W. Fish. It was the day of the grand opening of the business district. Since Sunday, February 18, 1923, the night it all burnt down extensive plans and expenditures to make this all happen finally comes to life. Without the help of Mr. Fish, Elcho would be a much different place, even today in 2023.

The Great Fire of 1923
February 18, 1923, was one of the longest days in Elcho’s history. A fire started in the drug store which was on the other side of CW Fish’s office building. The drug store housed the heating plant to service the drug store and Fish’s office. The fire spread quickly because of a northwest wind which blew the fire to the bank (which was the first Modern Woodmen of America Hall), to the Muskie Inn, the general store and then across the street taking out the depot. Everyone escaped unharmed. A couple of weeks later, CW Fish secured the funding to rebuild the entire business district. In September 1923, the business district reopened.

Little Village of Summit Lake
Summit Lake is noted for its sandy beaches, swimming, pan fish and northern pike. I believe it is the highest lake in Wisconsin. Also, there are trout streams, creeks with bullheads, deer and bear hunting, duck, geese and pheasant. Summit Lake is known as a tourist town (with many log cottages).
Summit Lake was known for its logging industry, saw mills and small farmers.
Peter Rasmussen was one of the first people in Summit Lake. He was a telegraph person – climbed poles and sent and received messages. He also built several cottages on the lake.
Summit Lake is in north central Wisconsin, in the township of Upham – the county of Langlade.
